Looking for a getaway “away” from the hustling bustling city life? Then Glacier National Park is the perfect place to unwind and relax amongst nature. Located in the American Northwest, Glacier National Park is a magical place in Montana’s Rocky Mountains, with snow-capped peaks and valleys running to the Canadian border.

Address: 10630 Old Hwy 2, Coram, MT 59913

This cute little convenience store is located right next to the cabins.

Glacier General Store and Cabins, located near the west entrance of the park, is a family run business that started out as a one stop family shop and later on expanded to cabins offering full housekeeping services. The cabins are just a 30-minute drive from Glacier Park International Airport which makes it super convenient if you’re arriving by a late night flight. The owners are very welcoming and they take the time to explain everything to you no matter what time it is!

We wanted to take a break from the city life and were in desperate need of a nature retreat. Glacier National Park seemed to be the perfect place for that and these cabins were everything that we needed. They are a set of four identical simple looking cabins located right on the Old Hwy 2, so they are pretty easy to locate. What I loved about them was their affordability. While the lodges inside the park start from around a whopping $275/night, we paid only $160/night for this spacious and cozy cabin, which is only about a 10 minute drive from the West Entrance of the park.

The cabin comes appointed with a soft and comfortable bed, fully functional kitchenette, living area with a comfortable couch, tidy bathroom, and a large front porch perfect for enjoying the star filled nights of Glacier National Park.

Might not be the most luxurious, but it has everything you’ll need

We reached the cabins in the evening and were greeted by the owner at their general store next door from where we had to pick up the keys. Upon entering the cabin, we were fairly impressed by the layout and how well they had used the space. Everybody loves a personal touch and we were very happy to see some complimentary granola bars and bottled water laid out for us as we were quite hungry from our travel. Plus, who doesn’t love gifts, right? Even though I’d recommend putting your phones away during your stay at the park, the cabins do offer free WiFi as well.

We’d recommend that you go food shopping and buy everything that you’ll need during your stay for two reasons. One, they provide you with this beautiful kitchen, so you’ve got to use it! Two, food options aren’t that great in National Parks anyway. Luckily, there’s a supermarket right on the way from the airport, so we bought some meats, vegetables, fruits, breads, sports drinks, energy bars and basically everything else we needed on our way to the cabins.

Super Foods Supermarket is conveniently located on U.S. Hwy 2

We enjoyed most of our meals indoors and you can tell we enjoyed it to the fullest.

It’s not like there aren’t any restaurants in the area. So, if cooking is not your thing, that’s completely okay too. There’s Glacier Grill & Pizza very close to the cabins and a couple of other food options in Columbia Falls as well, which is about a 15 minute drive from the cabins.

Amenities

  • A Queen log bed
  • Fully equipped kitchen
  • Refrigerator
  • Coffee/tea maker
  • Fresh towels and house-keeping
  • Hand-crafted organic lavender soap cakes

Few Things to Note

  • The owner, Chuck, also has a convenience store right next to the cabins which is fully stocked up with goodies and treats for your post-hike cravings.
  • He is also very knowledgeable about the park so be sure to tell him what you’re looking for in terms of hikes and he’ll be happy to tell you the best suited ones as per your needs. He is also well versed in bear behavior and will explain to you in detail how to be safe while wandering around in the bear country.

  • Since the cabins are located outside the park, even though only a 10-minute drive away, be sure to leave early for the park as the entrance can get pretty crowded during peak hours.

Planning and Budget

Even though these cabins are located outside the park, they sell out pretty early due to its optimal location between the park and the airport. Hence, you should make a booking at least 3 months in advance to get a better price. Because the more you wait, the higher the prices tend to become. We booked our stay at the Glacier General Store and Cabins around 2 months in advance and therefore paid $160/night but booking earlier can cost as little as $90 – $100/night.

Since Glacier Park International Airport is a small airport, flights can get pretty expensive especially during peak season from June to September, so planning ahead of time is very important. Look to make the flight bookings at least 2 months in advance. We flew from Seattle so our round trip cost for flights was around $270, which is still pretty steep considering Seattle is very close to Montana. But you can easily get cheaper flights if you make the booking earlier. Just keep in mind to look for the cheapest dates for flying.

Renting a car is a must when traveling to any national park because that will be your primary means of transportation. Even though most national parks have shuttle bus services, you will still need a car to get to the shuttle stops. We booked our rental car at a discounted rate from National Car Rental, located at the airport, so it cost us around $280 for 5 days.

We didn’t spend much on eating outside since we bought most of our food from the supermarket. So, our total expenditure on food was only around $130 for 5 days.

There’s also a $35 entrance fee to the park, which you can save on if you go to national parks a lot by getting a U.S. National Park Pass.

The only thing we had outside was the Huckleberry ice cream. Had to!

Hence, total money two of us spent on this trip was $1635 :

↠ $650 on cabin ā†ž
↠ $280 on rental car ā†ž
↠ $130 on food ā†ž
↠ $35 park entrance fees
